The 10th Annual International CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) Conference took place from June 15th to 19th at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. DTU was the only representative from Vietnam to participate in the event, presenting six papers on the topics of Innovations in Technical Education, New Scientific Technology Applications, Learning Express and Global Student Exchange Program.

The conference was attended by specialists, managers, engineers, instructors and students from technology institutions worldwide and renowned scholars such as Professor Edward F. Crawley, the President of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow, Professor Manuel Doblaré, the Scientific Director of Abengoa Research and Caroline Baillie, Dean of Engineering Education at the University of Western Australia. With "Sharing Successful Engineering Education Experiences" as their theme, conference participants focused on topics such as: CDIO application experiences in the construction of technical institutions, Engineering development programs, the Urgent need for more industrial research, and the Challenges of teaching Engineering worldwide.
Forums were organized to discuss and exchange experiences in Innovations in Teaching and Learning, Engineering Ethics, Sustainability, Social Responsibility, Faculty Development Programs, Program Evaluation and Accreditation, Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship and so on. Most topics related heavily on the CDIO approach.
DTU instructors at the Conference
Since becoming an official CDIO member in 2012, DTU has conducted several academic projects and had made great advancements in education, training, and research and in winning international competitions. As well as adopting PBL (Problem-Based Learning) as the framework of curricular planning for Business Management, Medicine and Humanities, Duy Tan University has recently applied CDIO in curricular planning for Engineering program.
DTU presented six proposals at the 10th International CDIO, including:
1. Assessing the Maturity Level of Teamwork Capabilities through CDIO Projects, by Tien Vu Truong, Nguyen Bao Le, Duc Man Nguyen and Minh Thang Nguyen.
2. The Benefits of CDIO for ABET Preparation, from a Hands-On Study in Vietnam, by Gia Nhu Nguyen, Nhat Tan Tran, Nguyen Bao Le, Thanh Trung Nguyen and Duc Man Nguyen.
3. Learning Computer Programming in a CDIO Team Setting, by Anh Phuong Pham, Duc Man Nguyen, Quoc Long Nguyen, Minh Thang Nguyen and Nguyen Bao Le.
4. Analysis of the Influence of Vietnamese Culture and Vietnam's General Education System for CDIO Implementation, by Dac Binh Ha and Chien Thang Nguyen.
5. Improvement of Individual Learning and the Instructor’s Role for Better Team Learning, by Le Thang Dong Tran, Minh Tung Dam and Chien Thang Nguyen.
6. Effectiveness of Cultural Appreciation via Online Learning, by Sin Moh Cheah, W.P. Aaron Yuen and Nguyen Bao Le.
The CDIO Conference and CDIO Academy are now highly regarded by CDIO members because they allow students to demonstrate their skill, confidence and creativity in an international competition. At the 2014 CDIO Academy, the Chalmers University of Technology from Sweden won the 2014 CDIO Cup with “A Driving Stimulator for a Sustainable Future”. DTU previously won an award at the CDIO Academy at Harvard University and MIT.
